Musk's network X criticizes Indian court – wants to defend freedom of expression
The social network X, owned by Elon Musk, expressed grave concern over a decision by an Indian court that rejected its appeal against stricter rules on content removal.
The company announced that it would go back to court to protect freedom of expression in the country. India has significantly tightened its control over the internet since 2023—more government officials have been allowed to issue removal orders, and a portal has been set up through which they can send instructions directly to technology companies.
X argues that this new mechanism has no legal basis, violates Supreme Court rulings, and infringes on the constitutional rights of Indians. However, the authorities counter that the aim is to combat illegal content and ensure accountability.
A judge ruled last week that freedom goes hand in hand with responsibility. Musk's social network emphasized that it respects Indian laws but, as a foreign company, has the right to express concerns about their impact on freedom of expression.
