The Charlie Kirk case: Tyler Robinson appeared in court

Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old vocational school student from Utah who is accused of murdering political activist Charlie Kirk, appeared briefly in court on Monday. The defense announced that it will request a preliminary hearing, in which the court will decide whether there is sufficient evidence for a trial.

Robinson fired a single shot from a rifle from a sniper position on the roof, killing Kirk, a close ally of President Donald Trump, while Kirk was speaking to a crowd on the campus of the university in Orem, Utah.

He was arrested after a 33-hour manhunt and is being held without bail. Prosecutors have announced that they will seek the death penalty if convicted.
His public defender, Kathryn Nester, told Judge Tony Graf that they do not intend to waive their right to a preliminary hearing.

The murder sparked fears of political violence and a media frenzy, including the temporary suspension of the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

According to the indictment, Robinson confessed to the murder in private messages. In them, he stated that he had had enough of Kirk and his hatred.
