Court halts Trump's deployment of the National Guard: If his arguments prevail, he will send them everywhere

A federal judge in Portland has temporarily blocked US President Donald Trump's decision to send 200 Oregon National Guard troops to Portland. Judge Karin Immergut, who was originally appointed by Trump himself, ruled that the president had no legal basis for this move.

She pointed out that he must wait until the Oregon state lawsuit has been resolved. The state claims that the deployment violates federal law and the constitutional rights of the state.

Immergut emphasized that there was no evidence of unrest that would justify military deployment and described Trump's claim that it was a “war zone” as exaggerated. According to Oregon's attorney general, protests in Portland have been largely peaceful in recent months, with few arrests.

The White House responded that it had acted in accordance with the law to protect federal property and would appeal the decision. The US president had previously sent the National Guard to Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., and plans to deploy it in other Democratic-led cities as well.

The judge pointed out that if the president's arguments were upheld, he could send soldiers “anywhere, anytime,” jeopardizing the line between civil and military power.
