The scientist was offline in the mountains for three weeks. He knew nothing about winning the Nobel Prize for days
Fred Ramsdell, an American immunologist and researcher at Sonoma Biotherapeutics, received the 2025 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discoveries in the field of T cells.
He shares the award with scientist Mary Brunkow from the American Institute for Systems Biology and Japanese professor Shimon Sakaguchi from Osaka University. According to The Guardian, the three were honored for their research on regulatory T cells, which play a key role in the body's immune system.
The financial award is 11 million Swedish kronor, which is equivalent to approximately one million euros.
Ramsdell was late in learning about the award because he had no reception during a three-week trip to the mountains of the American Northwest. The Nobel Committee was only able to contact him when his wife turned on his phone and discovered numerous congratulatory messages.
The committee has faced similar complications in the past – for example, in the cases of Bob Dylan and the winners of the prize in economic sciences in 2020.
