US military attacks suspicious ship in the Pacific

The US military has carried out an air strike on a suspicious ship in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of South America. This is the first known military operation in this region as part of the new US anti-drug offensive, which has already led to at least seven missions in the Caribbean. These have further exacerbated tensions with Venezuela and Colombia.

A US official, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that there were individuals on board the ship who were suspected of drug smuggling. He did not provide any information about the scope of the operation or further details.

The attack came at a time when the United States has significantly increased its military presence in the region, including the deployment of F-35 fighter jets, missile destroyers, a nuclear submarine, and more than 6,000 troops.

However, legal experts question why the Coast Guard, which has primary responsibility for maritime law, is not being used for these operations. They also criticize the US for resorting to lethal operations instead of choosing less invasive solutions.
