Trump confirms cancellation of summit with Putin. Meeting to take place later
US President Donald Trump confirmed on Wednesday that he had canceled the planned summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest. He cited a lack of progress in diplomatic efforts and the feeling that the timing was inappropriate as the reasons for the cancellation.
"We canceled the meeting with President Putin—it just didn't feel right. I didn't feel like we were getting where we wanted to go. So I canceled it, but we'll do it in the future,“ Trump said.
He also expressed frustration with the stalled talks. ”Honestly, every time I talk to Vladimir, it's a good conversation, but it doesn't lead to anything. It just doesn't lead to anything," he said.
The postponement of the summit came after the White House unveiled new sanctions on Russian oil exports — part of broader pressure on Moscow over its ongoing military operations in Ukraine. The president expressed hope that these measures would be temporary.
The Kremlin confirmed that no firm date had yet been set for the meeting and that “serious preparation” was necessary, which would take time. However, Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev emphasized that preparations were continuing – a point confirmed by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
