Vance sounds the alarm: A government shutdown could paralyze airports

US Vice President JD Vance warned that a prolonged government shutdown lasting until the Thanksgiving holiday could spell “disaster” for air travel.

After meeting with representatives of major airlines and unions, Vance pointed to possible consequences such as increased security problems, more delays, and staff shortages—many employees are currently working without pay. According to Delta Air Lines, the system is already under severe pressure and showing significant slowdowns.

Air traffic controllers and TSA security personnel are currently working without pay; many are looking for side jobs. Absenteeism has risen sharply – ninefold on some days.

Airlines are warning of declining safety and calling on Congress to quickly pass transitional funding to maintain operations.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is also struggling with a serious staff shortage – there is a shortage of around 3,500 air traffic controllers. Observers recall the crisis of 2019, when a 35-day shutdown brought US air traffic to a virtual standstill.
