Carney apologized to Trump for advertising with Reagan
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney apologized to US President Donald Trump on Saturday for a political advertisement that targeted US tariff policy. This occurred during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea.
Carney instructed Ontario Premier Doug Ford not to air the advertisement. He conveyed his apology to Trump privately during a dinner hosted by the South Korean president.
The Canadian prime minister confirmed that he had reviewed the ad and rejected its broadcast. Ontario Premier Ford had commissioned a campaign featuring a clip of former President Ronald Reagan talking about the negative effects of tariffs on trade. In response to this commercial, Trump raised tariffs on Canadian goods and suspended trade negotiations with Canada.
At a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Community, Carney also exchanged views with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He described the conversation as a breakthrough after years of tension between China and Canada.
