Bulgaria sets up commission to investigate the influence of Soros foundations
Bulgaria's parliament has set up a commission to investigate the alleged influence of non-profits and companies linked to George and Alexander Soros, Balkan Insight reports.
The initiative came from the New Beginning movement of former media tycoon Delyan Peevski. In parliament, MPs from the two ruling coalition parties also voted in favour of the creation of the commission.
The ruling GERB party abstained or voted against. The commission is to investigate possible links between Soros organisations and political parties, the media, education and state institutions.
Although the proposal to specifically vet foundations such as Open Society and America for Bulgaria did not pass, some MPs openly accuse them of undue influence.
