After a typhoon that killed more than 200 people, another threatens the Philippines
The Philippines has evacuated more than 100 thousand people in areas threatened by super typhoon Fung-wong, locally known as Uwan. The typhoon has reached wind speeds gusting up to 230 kilometres per hour and is expected to hit central Luzon, particularly Aurora province, by Sunday evening at the earliest.
Authorities have declared the highest level of warning in southeastern Luzon and issued lower warning levels for Metro Manila and surrounding areas. Power has already gone out in Eastern Visayas and more than 300 flights had to be cancelled.
Video footage from Catanduanes shows strong winds and heavy rain. The Coast Guard reports evacuations in Camarines Sur, where residents were being transported by boats and trucks.
The typhoon comes just days after the devastating Kalmaegi, which killed 204 people in the Philippines and also hit Vietnam, where it claimed five more victims. In the Vietnamese village of Vung Cheo, the typhoon destroyed a number of lobster farms and caused widespread damage.
