France marks ten years since the Paris terrorist attacks

France on Thursday marks the tenth anniversary of the November 13, 2015 terrorist attacks in which gunmen and suicide bombers from the Islamic State killed 130 people and wounded hundreds more. The attacks targeted cafes, restaurants, the Bataclan concert hall and the Stade de France stadium.

They were the bloodiest attacks on French soil since the Second World War. In the aftermath, the government adopted a series of emergency security measures, which later became part of the legislation.

The attacks began with explosions outside the Stade de France, where a football match was taking place, and continued with gunfire at several locations in central Paris, including the Bataclan, where a concert by the American band Eagles of Death Metal was taking place.

President Emmanuel Macron plans to attend commemorations at the sites of the attacks on Thursday, along with heads of state, survivors and the wounded.

Security services say the threat of similar attacks has changed in a decade - Islamic State no longer has the capacity for coordinated action - but the risk of online radicalisation remains.
