Meloni continues plan for migration camps in Albania

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni plans to open migration camps in Albania.

Italy and Albania have agreed to transfer migrants caught at sea to Albania, where the authorities will examine their asylum claims.

However, this project came to a halt when Italian judges returned the migrants to Italy. The European Court also ruled against the Italian plan.

However, Prime Minister Meloni does not believe that the project will be stopped. She says that once the new European rules on migration are in place, the camps in Albania will be able to operate. This should be from the middle of next year.

Italy was expecting the camps to process applications from around 36 thousand migrants a year and to reject most of them. So far, the camps, which opened in October, are mostly empty.
