Orbán: Ukraine can be persuaded to end conflict, has lost sovereignty

At an anti-war rally in Győr, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stressed that time is playing in Russia's favour in the conflict between Ukraine. He thinks it will be easier to persuade Ukraine to end the fighting, as it has already lost its sovereignty and is heavily dependent on the support of Western states, according to telex.hu.

He added that the situation in the case of Russia is more complicated, while other countries should continue their peace efforts. However, the Hungarian prime minister believes that neither side in the conflict wants peace.

In his words, in the past, "as the leader of a friendly neighbouring country", he tried to convince Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that "time is not on their side. The longer the war lasts, the more they lose". Orbán stated that he had failed to convince the Ukrainian leader that he was in a losing position.

The Hungarian prime minister declared that Europe was on the brink of war and strongly opposed an escalation of the conflict. He stated that the European Union has the tools at its disposal to motivate Ukraine towards peace, as its existence is conditional on European funding.
