Police officer accused of transphobic behaviour, force to step up LGBT training
Police in DeKalb County, Georgia, are investigating a case of alleged "misgendering" after a police officer tipped off a transgender man using the women's restroom at a library, National Review reports.
According to the man, who goes by Sasha Swinson and identifies as a woman, the police officer said that next time he must use the men's or family restrooms. He dismissed the officer's efforts to protect girls and women as transphobic.
The incident triggered an investigation and calls for increased training for police officers on inclusion. County officials called the situation a "learning opportunity" and confirmed that a new course focusing on LGBT issues will become part of training starting in 2026.
The content of the training appeals to equality and respect for diversity despite personal views. However, it is unclear whether the police officer will face punishment. The union points out that legislation on restroom use is lacking in Georgia, so it is relying on the "common sense" of police officers.
Critics warn against police becoming "victims of the culture wars" as the company remains divided on the issue.
