Pentagon pulls National Guard troops out of Chicago and Portland
The U.S. Department of Defense withdraws National Guard troops from Chicago and Portland weeks after their deployment. The first 200 California troops from Portland and 200 Texas troops from Chicago will return to their home states as early as Sunday.
The Trump administration deployed those troops last month to support immigration authorities against alleged activist attacks. However, the troops have not been involved in any operations due to legal disputes over their deployment.
U.S. Northern Command has announced that the Defense Department will move and adjust its presence in Portland, Los Angeles and Chicago in the coming days to ensure a "permanent and long-term presence." Troops will be deployed whenever there is a need to support security forces.
