Gaza firm stops water supply after Hamas detains its employee
In the Gaza Strip, water supplies have been severely disrupted after the main operator of desalination plants suspended operations.
The Abdul Salam Yassin Company, which supplies water to almost half the population, reacted to the detention of one of its workers by Hamas. The head of the board, Youssef Yassin, warned that more than a million people would be affected by the move.
Hamas did not give reasons for the arrest and did not comment on the situation. In addition to the shutdown of facilities, more than 70 trucks delivering water have also stopped working.
Hamas is once again trying to consolidate its power in areas abandoned by Israel. It is expected to worsen an already critical situation caused by two years of war and damaged infrastructure.
Yet the disruption is one of the few public displays of local disapproval of Hamas.
