US and Russia are considering a new prisoner swap, Russian envoy confirms

Russia and the US are again negotiating a prisoner exchange. According to Axios, the Russian president's envoy Kirill Dmitriev attended the talks and said he had discussions with U.S. officials and people from U.S. President Donald Trump's team.

Washington confirmed the meetings, but also warned that a deal was not yet on the table. The aim is supposed to be an exchange of people on humanitarian grounds, initiated by the US side.

This is not the first such attempt. In 2024, the largest exchange since the Cold War took place - well-known prisoners such as Evan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan returned home.

This time, Dmitriev also held talks with US envoy Steve Witkoff. Moscow hopes not only for a concrete result from the exchange, but also for improved relations with the US. However, it is not yet clear who exactly might take part in the exchange.
