Commission prepares legal proposal on the use of Russian assets for Ukraine

The European Commission is ready to formally present a legal proposal to allow frozen Russian assets to be used to support Ukraine.

This was stated by its President Ursula von der Leyen in a speech to the European Parliament, stressing that this is a step to defend Europe's security and preserve the principle of inviolability of borders.

Von der Leyen also welcomed US President Donald Trump's efforts to end the conflict, but warned that a peace agreement must guarantee the long-term security of both Ukraine and the European continent.

Accepting border violations would legitimise aggression and could lead to more wars in the future, she said.
