Donald Trump endorses 'Manhattan Project' for artificial intelligence

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order kicking off a grand federal project for the development of artificial intelligence, "Mission Genesis," NBC reports. The initiative is a direct reference to Project Manhattan, the pioneering program to develop the atomic bomb.

The goal of this "Mission Genesis" project is to accelerate discoveries in the field of artificial intelligence, strengthening American security and energy. It will unify federal data and computational capabilities for AI models, open access to government databases, and promote the application of AI models in fields such as robotics, biotechnology, and nuclear energy.

Michael Kratsios, the president's science and research adviser, is in charge, with the infrastructure to be provided by Energy Secretary Chris Wright.

The project builds on the experience of the NAIRR program and will expand partnerships with technology leaders such as AMD, Nvidia and HPE; a new generation of AI supercomputers will be built at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The main goal of this project is to consolidate the United States as a world leader in AI research and deployment.
