Hong Kong fire death toll nears 100, government and businesses pledge aid

On Friday, Hong Kong closes one of the most tragic chapters in modern history. Firefighters are expected to complete the search for victims of the devastating fire at the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex in Tai Po district that left at least 94 dead. Two Indonesian domestic helpers are among the dead.

Hundreds of people are still missing and dozens more have sustained injuries. The complex, occupied by more than 4,600 people, was undergoing reconstruction when the fire engulfed it on Wednesday afternoon. Bamboo scaffolding and combustible mesh helped the flames spread quickly.

Police have already arrested three workers of Prestige Construction, including two directors, on suspicion of manslaughter due to the use of hazardous materials. Firefighters are continuing to inspect all housing units to rule out further casualties.

The government has announced the establishment of a $39 million fund to help those affected, and major Chinese companies have pledged financial support as well.

This is the deadliest fire in Hong Kong since 1948 and is reminiscent of the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London.
