Tragedy in Hong Kong sparks tensions ahead of election
Following a tragic fire at a Hong Kong apartment complex that killed at least 151 people, the city's mayor, John Lee, has ordered an independent investigation led by a judge. The fire spread through seven high-rise buildings, with combustible building materials used in renovations cited as a major factor.
Police have arrested more than 20 people in connection with dereliction of duty and possible corruption. However, critics warn of the authorities' efforts to stifle any public criticism - several students have even been detained for alleged incitement.
International organisations are calling for transparency. The tragedy took place just days before the scheduled elections.
Residents were offered assistance, including financial support and temporary housing. The fire also killed dozens of pets and vigils to honour the victims are to be held outside Hong Kong.
