Europe reaches deal to end Russian gas by autumn 2027
The European Council agrees with the European Parliament to phase out Russian gas imports by 2027.
The agreement introduces a legally binding ban on imports of liquefied natural gas at the end of 2026, and a full ban on pipeline gas to apply from autumn 2027.
In October, Russian gas accounted for about 12 percent of EU gas imports, compared to about 45 percent before the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Countries that still take Russian gas include Hungary, Slovakia, France and Belgium.
