French PM wants to tackle the budget with an emergency law

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu is trying to avoid paralysing the government by pushing for an emergency law before the start of 2026.

After lawmakers failed to agree on a regular budget on Friday, Lecornu is looking for a makeshift solution that would allow the state to continue spending, collecting taxes and financing loans.

On Monday, he held talks with leaders of most political parties. Parliament is expected to approve the emergency measure as early as Tuesday, allowing time to fine-tune the final budget during January.

Lecornu also faces pressure not to use constitutional powers that could trigger a confidence vote. In the current unstable situation, his minority government has limited options.

Meanwhile, last year's temporary measures cost France €12 billion.
