United States plans to build "Trump-class" ships
President Donald Trump on Monday announced a plan to build new ships that would be bigger, faster and "a hundred times stronger" than any previous ones.
The project is intended to strengthen US naval supremacy and will begin with the construction of two vessels as part of an expanded "Gold Fleet" project. Trump has said the project will eventually expand to "20 to 25 new vessels".
Pentagon Secretary of the Navy John Phelan said the planned construction of the warships will result in "more tonnage and firepower in a single project than at any time in history."
The plan is to manufacture components for these ships in every US state. The vessels will also be equipped with nuclear missiles.
In addition to the new "Trump-class" ships, the "Gold Fleet" would also include an increase in the number of other types of warships, including a smaller class of frigates.
