For example, the war in Ukraine, the conflict in the Middle East, the civil war in Sudan or the US attack on Venezuela. A divided society, violence in politics, corruption... We see one bad news after another. And this is not to make light of it, there are indeed many bad things happening in the world and in our geopolitical space.
But in spite of it all, humanity has moved on by leaps and bounds in the year that is coming to an end. Judge for yourself. Deforestation in Brazil has fallen again this year, this time by 11 per cent year-on-year. Paris has opened the Seine to the public, residents can swim in the clean river after a century-long ban. On Mount Everest, drones began helping Sherpas clean up the polluted mountain.
Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis has come up with a new drug for malaria. The promising drug is the biggest breakthrough in the fight against the deadly disease this century and could soon start saving millions of lives. There has also been a breakthrough in the treatment of the deadly hereditary Huntington's disease, which until now has had no effective treatment. In Brazil, dengue fever can now be vaccinated against with a single vaccine.
There have been so many technological advances that there is no need to mention them. We have all seen first-hand how artificial intelligence has advanced. Some of us have taken rides in self-driving taxis, of which there are more and more in the United States. We have also seen robotic food deliveries in the streets around us. For the first time, Tesla delivered a new car directly from the driverless line to a customer's home.
And although the world around us doesn't look like it, violence is also on the decline in some statistics. In the United States in 2025, there are the fewest multiple murders since 2006, young people are committing less crime, and violence is statistically down in Mexico and Brazil, where it might look very different from our TV screens.
There is much more, a short list of all that billions of people around the world have accomplished when they are not fighting, dabbling in politics and trying to use violence to wield power over others.
The year 2025 was amazing in many ways, and the year ahead will most likely be even better.
