Kosovo elections to be defended by the ruling party

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti's Vetëvendosje party is likely to win Sunday's elections. Exit polls predicted it to win 45.7 percent of the vote. This will be the second parliamentary election in Kosovo during 2025.

However, early results show that her gain could be even higher. The party received up to 50.2 percent of the vote after 61 percent of the ballots were counted. Nevertheless, it is still unclear whether the party will win the 61 seats in the 120-seat parliament it needs to govern on its own.

This would leave Kosovo in another political stalemate. Without a functioning government, the country will face serious problems. MPs have until April to elect a new president, negotiate and ratify around EUR 1 billion in loans from the European Union, the World Bank and much more. Months of failed coalition talks led to the dissolution of parliament back in November.

The two main opposition parties, the Democratic Party and the Democratic League, won 20 percent and 14.1 percent of the vote, respectively, after nearly two-thirds of the ballots were counted.
