New York's first Muslim mayor swears on the Koran

Zohran Mamdani became the first ever Muslim mayor of New York City. He took office at the turn of the year, taking the oath of office with his hand placed on the Koran - specifically one of three copies, including one that belonged to his grandfather.

The ceremony was held at midnight in the historic, now-defunct Old City Hall subway station as a tribute to the workers and a symbol of a vision of a city capable of great projects.

Mamdani, who describes himself as a democratic socialist, won the election in November by a wide margin, according to the Telegraph. He defeated both former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. He campaigned on universal childcare, free public transport and a rent freeze for a million apartments.

His agenda led to record turnout, with over two million voters turning out to the polls.

Although investment circles expressed concerns about his policies, Mamdani later met with President Donald Trump and signalled a willingness to cooperate.

He took office on 1 January in accordance with the law.
