Ukraine rejects accusations of drone attack on celebrations in Kherson region

The Ukrainian military has rejected Russian claims of responsibility for a deadly drone attack during New Year celebrations in the village of Chorly in the Russian-controlled part of Kherson Oblast.

Russian official Volodymyr Saldo initially reported 24 casualties, later raising the number but did not specify. According to Moscow, it was an act of terrorism that also left 50 injured.

However, Ukraine claims that this is a disinformation campaign to influence international partners and peace negotiations.

It has also stressed that its armed forces are only targeting military and energy targets and claims that Russia itself has launched a large-scale drone attack on energy infrastructure in seven Ukrainian regions.

However, there is no independent evidence of a high number of casualties, although footage from the scene of the incident shows a burnt-out restaurant. Saldo said the dead included a child and accused President Volodymyr Zelensky of a lack of interest in peace.
