Japan is hit by a magnitude 6.2 earthquake

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck the western Chugoku region of Japan on Tuesday. A series of strong aftershocks followed, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The epicentre of the first quake was in eastern Shimane prefecture, but there is no danger of a tsunami.

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority said no irregularities were recorded after the quake.
