Trump discusses acquiring Greenland, use of military is in play
The White House confirmed on Tuesday that President Donald Trump is once again considering various options to retake Greenland, including the potential use of the US military, even though the autonomous territory clearly refuses to be part of the US.
Trump has identified Greenland as a national security priority to "deter our adversaries in the Arctic region."
The administration is considering a number of scenarios, including buying the island or entering into a free association agreement that would give Greenland a degree of autonomy. Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has repeatedly stressed that it is "not for sale" and does not want to be part of the United States, and the territory belongs to its people.
European leaders and the Danish prime minister have warned that any military action could seriously undermine the stability of NATO and jeopardize long-term alliance relations.
