The US has presented a controversial plan for Venezuela

The United States has presented a controversial three-phase plan for Venezuela following the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the goal is to stabilize the country, followed by economic recovery and, finally, political transition.

The US will also allow American oil companies to enter the Venezuelan market.

US President Donald Trump has threatened further military intervention if the country's new leadership does not cooperate. However, the plan has been heavily criticized by Democrats, with Senator Chris Murphy calling it "oil theft at gunpoint."

Rubio countered that the US had prevented chaos and would also support the return of the opposition and the restoration of civil society. Details of the transition phase are still lacking.
