Greenland opposition leader wants talks with US without Denmark
Greenland's largest opposition party, Naleraq, is calling for direct negotiations with the United States without Denmark's involvement. Its leader, Pele Broberg, told Reuters that Copenhagen's mediation is unnecessarily exacerbating relations between Greenland and Washington.
The island is considering how to respond to renewed pressure from US President Donald Trump, who in recent weeks has again been talking about taking control of Greenland, as he did in 2019.
Greenland is strategically important for the US missile defense system and has rich mineral resources that fit in with US efforts to reduce dependence on China. The island is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, but foreign policy and defense remain in the hands of Copenhagen.
However, Greenland's Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt has stated that direct negotiations with the US without Denmark are not legally possible.
Next week, Danish and Greenlandic diplomats are set to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to address tensions between NATO allies.
