The US reportedly wants to pay Greenlanders to break away from Denmark

The United States is considering one-time payments to Greenlanders in an effort to acquire the island from Denmark. According to four sources familiar with the negotiations, the amount under discussion is between $10,000 and $100,000 per person.

This plan is part of a broader strategy being pursued by the White House under President Donald Trump to acquire the strategically important Greenland, including diplomatic and military options.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen responded to Trump's comments with a post: "Enough is enough. No more fantasies about annexation." Together with the leaders of Denmark and other European countries, he also rejected the idea of "buying" Greenland. In a joint statement, the seven EU countries declared that only Denmark and the Greenlanders themselves can decide on Greenland's relations.

Trump claims that Greenland is essential to US national security and points to its mineral wealth. After the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro over the weekend, according to White House sources, efforts to transfer this momentum to the Greenland issue have increased.

Payments could reach nearly $6 billion, but details about their form and conditions remain unclear. According to the US, purchase is the preferred solution, but military intervention is not ruled out.
