Le Pen faces five-year ban, court decision approaching

Marine Le Pen, leader of the French right wing, is beginning a crucial appeal hearing in Paris that will decide her political future.

After being found guilty of misusing EU funds last March and receiving a five-year ban on running for office, her chances of running for president in 2027 are hanging by a thread. Le Pen insists she is innocent and claims that this is politically motivated persecution.

The case also has an international dimension. US President Donald Trump has publicly expressed his support for her, and although the US has denied discussions about sanctions against French judges, the French government remains vigilant.

If Le Pen fails, her successor Jordan Bardella, who is the favorite in the presidential elections according to polls, is in the game. The court's decision is expected before the summer and could fundamentally change the balance of power in French politics.
