Former Polish minister Ziobro granted political asylum in Hungary
Former Polish Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro announced on Monday that he had decided to take advantage of the asylum granted to him by the Hungarian government. He justified this decision by citing political repression in Poland.
A few days ago, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Hungarian ambassador after Budapest granted asylum to two Polish citizens. These individuals have not yet been publicly identified. Polish Ministry spokesman Maciej Wewior announced that Warsaw would lodge an objection to this decision with Hungary.
The information was published by the VSquare website, according to which the Hungarian delegation in Brussels sent a letter about the granting of asylum. The letter did not mention any names or reasons. The Hungarian government did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
In 2024, Hungary also granted asylum to Marcin Romanowski, former deputy minister of justice from the Law and Justice (PiS) party. Polish prosecutors accuse him of misusing public funds, which Romanowski denies.
Relations between Poland and Hungary, once close allies, have deteriorated, mainly due to their differing attitudes toward Russia. Tensions deepened after the pro-European government of Donald Tusk took office, promising to hold representatives of the former government accountable.
