Thailand: Crane collapses onto train, dozens reported dead and injured
At least 25 people were killed and approximately 80 others injured in a serious train accident in northeastern Thailand on Wednesday. The train derailed after a construction crane fell on three of its carriages, police said.
The train was traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province. According to local authorities, there are still more bodies in the wreckage that have not yet been recovered due to the risk of further movement of the crane.
Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said there were 195 passengers on board and ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. The victims were in two of the three carriages hit by the crane.
The crane was working on a high-speed rail project being built above the existing track. After it fell, the train derailed and briefly caught fire. Published images show overturned carriages and firefighters responding to the fire.
