Russia detains doctors after nine babies die in maternity ward

The deaths of nine newborns in a Siberian maternity hospital between December and early January have caused widespread outrage in Russia.

Russian authorities have detained the chief physician and head of the intensive care unit, accusing them of negligence in providing medical care. The investigative commission claims that their failure to fulfill their professional duties contributed to the tragedy.

The case has sparked public debate, with many pointing to the failure of the system and asking how the country intends to increase the birth rate—one of President Vladimir Putin's main goals—if newborns are dying in hospitals.

Neither the doctors nor their legal representatives have yet been contacted. The circumstances of the tragedy are still being investigated by law enforcement authorities.
