Tesla will discontinue one-time FSD sales, offering only a monthly subscription
Tesla is changing its strategy for selling its autonomous driving software. Elon Musk has announced that from February 14, 2026, the FSD (Full Self-Driving) package will only be available as a monthly subscription.
Until now, customers could also choose a one-time payment of $8,000. The monthly fee in the US remains at $99. However, FSD is still a system that requires active driver supervision.
At the same time, it is a technology that is facing increased scrutiny from authorities. The US regulator NHTSA is investigating nearly 2.9 million Tesla cars for dozens of reports of safety violations and accidents.
Tesla therefore refers to FSD as "supervised" – i.e., a system under supervision. However, it also uses an unsupervised version as part of its internal factory processes.
The FSD feature allows vehicles to change lanes independently and respond to traffic signs, taking car autonomy beyond standard autopilot.
