Interventions against Iranians are reportedly subsiding, but the US is withdrawing personnel
The United States is withdrawing some personnel from bases in the Middle East, a US official said on Wednesday. This followed confirmation by a senior Iranian official that Tehran had warned its neighbors that it would attack US bases in the event of an attack by Washington.
As Iran's leadership struggles to quell the worst domestic unrest the Islamic Republic has ever faced, Tehran is trying to deter US President Donald Trump from repeated threats of intervention on behalf of anti-government protesters.
The UN Security Council is set to meet on Thursday at the request of the United States to discuss the situation in Iran.
An anonymous US official said that the United States is preemptively withdrawing some personnel from key bases in the region due to increased regional tensions.
According to him, Trump has been told that the number of killings in the Iranian government's crackdown on protests is declining and that he believes there are currently no plans for large-scale executions. The US president has repeatedly stated that "help is on the way" and has not ruled out potential military action.
