Iran warns US against attack, regime hints at executions

On Sunday, the Iranian president warned that any US military strike would provoke a "harsh and regrettable response" from Tehran.

The statement came after a regional Iranian official said that at least 5,000 people, including about 500 security personnel, had been killed in nationwide protests.

The protests broke out last month over economic problems and quickly spread across the country. They gradually took on a political character, with calls for an end to clerical rule. People across generations and social classes took part.

US President Donald Trump repeatedly threatened intervention if protesters were killed or executed, stating that "Iran needs new leadership." Tehran has indicated that it may continue to execute detainees, with the judiciary citing the crime of "mohareb," which carries the death penalty.
