China recorded a record decline in population and marriages
China's population fell by 3.39 million to 1.405 billion last year, marking the fourth consecutive year of decline, with the rate of decline accelerating compared to the previous year. The number of births fell to a historic low of 7.92 million, while deaths rose to 11.31 million.
The rapidly aging society threatens Beijing's plans to revive domestic consumption and stabilize public debt, as millions of people are leaving the labor market and the pension system is already under pressure.
There has also been a sharp decline in marriages, with only 6.1 million in 2024, representing a year-on-year decline of one-fifth.
The lower number of marriages is seen in China as a warning sign of a further decline in the birth rate. Nevertheless, demographers expect a slight improvement – from May 2025, couples will be able to marry anywhere in the country, which could increase their number.
