Trump on Greenland: Now is the time, and it will happen

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump said that Denmark had failed to remove the "Russian threat" from Greenland and suggested that it was time to act. "Now is the time, and it will happen!!!" Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social.

He claimed that NATO has been warning Denmark for two decades about the need to address security risks associated with Russia in the Greenland area, but Copenhagen has failed to do so. "Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it," Trump said.

The White House, the Danish Presidency of the EU Council, and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

Trump has long insisted that the United States should acquire Greenland. However, Denmark and Greenland officials have repeatedly emphasized that the island is not for sale and has no interest in becoming part of the US.

On Saturday, Trump also threatened to impose gradually increasing tariffs on eight European countries until they allow the United States to buy Greenland. In response, the allies called an emergency summit for Thursday.
