Two high-speed trains collided in Spain

On Sunday evening, a tragic collision between two trains occurred in southern Spain, claiming at least 21 lives, according to police. The accident happened near the town of Adamuz, where the Iryo train from Malaga to Madrid derailed and collided with an oncoming Renfe express train bound for Huelva.

The impact swept the second train off the tracks and it subsequently crashed down an embankment. There were approximately 100 people traveling on it, and more than 300 on the Iryo. At least 75 people were injured, 15 of them seriously.

Local authorities warn that the number of victims may rise as several passengers remain trapped in the wreckage. The collision occurred on a flat section of track that was modernized only last year. According to the Minister of Transport, this is an unusual accident.

Rescue teams are on site, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has canceled his schedule.
