Reuters: US held talks with Venezuelan minister even before the attack

US officials secretly negotiated with Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello even before the January operation to detain Nicolás Maduro – and they have maintained contact with him even after his removal from office.

According to several sources, Reuters warned Cabello not to abuse the security forces against the opposition.

Although he is accused of drug trafficking and the US has offered a $25 million reward for him, he remains at large. Cabello has strong influence over the army, secret services, and armed militias, making him a key player in the transition period.

According to reports, the US fears that he could disrupt the plans of President Delcy Rodríguez's transitional government, even though he outwardly declares his loyalty. Venezuela, however, denies any secret agreements.

Despite official statements, some political prisoners have been released—Cabello is responsible for overseeing this, although human rights organizations claim that the process is slow.
