Trump praised British soldiers, having previously claimed they stood outside the front line

US President Donald Trump is trying to calm tensions after a stormy reaction to his comments about NATO troops in Afghanistan. On Saturday, he described British soldiers as "great and very brave" and highlighted their sacrifices during the conflict, in which Britain lost 457 men.

The comments came just a day after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called Trump's words "insulting and outrageous." The president claimed that European troops stood on the sidelines and that NATO was useless to the US.

British veterans and Prince Harry also joined the debate, emphasizing the need to respect the fallen. According to The Sun, Trump was also informed of King Charles' concerns.

Starmer spoke personally with the president on Saturday and reminded him of the sacrifices made by British and American soldiers.
