Trump cut funding for ICE body cameras and limited surveillance
In recent years, the administration of US President Donald Trump has restricted the use of body cameras by immigration officials and significantly reduced the number of surveillance personnel.
This has happened at a time when the government has increased the deployment of immigration forces in Minneapolis and other cities, resulting in several violent clashes.
Despite this, last year the Trump administration asked Congress to cut funding for the ICE body camera program by 75 percent and limited its expansion. At the same time, they sent hundreds of employees of three Interior Security Department inspection agencies on paid leave, significantly weakening the ability to investigate possible abuses of power.
The White House claims that immigration officials are acting lawfully and protecting the public. Critics, however, point out that without cameras and effective oversight, there is a growing risk of uninvestigated violence during immigration raids.
