Migrant pulled girl under subway train after attacking police officers

Hamburg police are investigating a tragic incident at the Wandsbek Markt subway station, where two people died on Thursday evening after falling under an arriving train. According to current findings, a 25-year-old man from South Sudan unexpectedly attacked an 18-year-old woman waiting for the subway and pulled her onto the tracks with him. The police are treating the case as suspected intentional homicide.

The Bild and Welt newspapers report that the suspect was already known to the security forces. Just two days before the tragedy, he attacked police officers who arrested him but subsequently released him.

Witnesses say the man may have been under the influence of alcohol and made a threatening statement shortly before the incident. Investigators have no information yet that the victims knew each other.

The case has been taken over by the Hamburg homicide investigation team, which is analyzing CCTV footage and witness statements. According to available information, the man had a valid residence permit and came to Germany under a humanitarian program in 2024.
