We must promote a "Made in Europe" strategy, says EU industry chief

The European Union should significantly strengthen the protection of its own industry through a "Made in Europe" strategy. This is according to European Commissioner and EU Industry Chief Stephane Sejourne in an opinion piece signed by more than 1,100 CEOs and business leaders.

According to him, without an ambitious and pragmatic industrial policy, the European economy is doomed to serve as a playground for global competitors.

Sejourne calls for the introduction of "genuine European preference," especially in strategic sectors, and emphasizes that public money should support European manufacturing and quality jobs. His call comes shortly before the presentation of the Industrial Accelerator Act, which is intended to favor locally manufactured products.

The proposal aims to strengthen the EU against cheap imports, particularly from China, but at the same time reveals divisions between member states.

While France supports the initiative, countries such as Sweden and the Czech Republic warn of higher prices, weaker investment, and a loss of global competitiveness.
