Britain and Microsoft to develop system for detecting deepfakes

The British government has announced a collaboration with Microsoft, academic institutions, and technology experts to develop a system to help detect deepfake content on the internet.

The goal is to create a unified evaluation framework to test tools for identifying fake videos, images, and audio recordings created using artificial intelligence.

Although manipulated content is not a new phenomenon, the rapid rise of generative AI has significantly increased its quality and quantity, which, according to the government, undermines public confidence in online information.

Technology Minister Liz Kendall warned that deepfakes are increasingly being misused for fraud, sexual exploitation, and impersonation.

The new framework will test how effective existing technologies are in real-world situations, such as combating sexual abuse or financial fraud. According to official data, the number of deepfakes shared in the UK increased sixfold between 2023 and 2025.
