EU investigates Shein for selling weapons and child sex dolls

The European Commission has launched a wide-ranging investigation into the Chinese online platform Shein after child sex dolls, weapons, and dangerous products appeared on its website, according to Politico.

This is the first formal action against the company under the Digital Services Act (DSA), which regulates the operation of large online platforms in the EU. If the violations are confirmed, Shein could face a fine of up to six percent of its global annual turnover.

The Commission is investigating whether the company has adequately assessed and mitigated the risks of selling illegal goods, including dangerous toys and cosmetics. It is also focusing on the platform's design, particularly bonus programs and "gamification" elements that may encourage addictive behavior.

The recommendation algorithm and transparency of services are also under scrutiny. Shein claims that it is cooperating with regulators and has introduced age verification to protect minors. The case is also being monitored by the Irish regulator, as the company's European headquarters are located in Ireland.
